City pupils represent Liverpool City Region and acquire new skills sailing in the Irish Sea

Pupils from St Francis Xavier College enjoyed a successful seven-day sail around the Irish Sea.

The year 10 students represented Liverpool on the 'Three Cities Voyage', and they got to learn lots of new skills which will stand them in good stead for the future.

The trip was a celebration of sail training and maritime industries and it was organised in collaboration between Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust (MAST) and Sail Training Ireland.

The students had a great experience, enabling them to increase knowledge of different careers in the maritime industries.

Mr Jim Graves B.E.M., Chair of Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust (MAST) was delighted with the pupils who represented Liverpool and he said: "These nine students worked together with other young people from all around Ireland to increase their knowledge and skills of sail training, develop communication skills, team building and increase resilience.”

When students were asked how they felt about taking part in this amazing opportunity, their excitement was reflected in a selection of their comments, which included: 'I enjoyed the hands-on experience of the voyage. I liked learning new skills, and I enjoyed being part of a crew and visiting Ireland.’

"'The voyage was an opportunity that I didn't want to miss. Although it looks good on my CV, the experience and being part of a crew was invaluable for my future. I hope that the skills and life lessons I learnt lead onto more similar voyages for me.'

Mr David Hayes, Headteacher at SFX, said: "This was a wonderful opportunity for the SFX students. It will have a profound and lasting impact on those who went, and it will inspire students in other year groups and across the city region."

After heading to Holyhead, the pupils went on the ferry to Dublin, where they joined the tall ship ‘Pelican of London' and they gathered with other young people from across Ireland.

On the voyage, they were informed of all the potential maritime careers as part of their journey.
