A city centre bar and nightclub could open until 6am during the summer and hopes to trade longer during the Grand National.
According to information made public by Liverpool Council, a proposal has been made by the operators of 54 bar on Seel Street to amend the terms of its existing premises licence. The venue is seeking to make changes to the times it opens until as well as how long it can serve alcohol for both off and on site.
Currently, 54 has a licence to trade from 8am to 4am Monday to Saturday and until 3am on a Sunday. Should its bid to Liverpool Council be successful, this would change to 5am over the weekend for “films, live and recorded music, performance of dance and other similar activities indoors, in addition to late night refreshment and supply of alcohol on and off premises.”

Additionally, the venue is seeking to open until 6am during British Summer Time and has applied for an extension of the terminal hour during this period. This usually occurs between March and October.
54 opened its doors in 2020, inspired by the New York disco scene and was the brainchild of the team behind the former 53 Degrees bar on Berry Street. That venue was gutted by a fire that ripped through the building during the early hours in August 2019.
Dozens of emergency service staff were deployed to the scene to contain the flames. Nobody was hurt in the blaze almost four years ago.
According to 54’s application to the local authority, during the Grand National festival in Aintree in April, the bar hopes to be able to open from 7am and serve alcohol from that time. It would be for the duration of the event only.
Those who wish to comment on the application to vary the licence can do so via Liverpool Council’s website until January 28. It will then go before a committee of three councillors who will make a decision as to whether to grant the amended terms.
54’s existing licence was granted to holder Shaun Royden in June 2021 and is held indefinitely. The new application would apply across the business’ two floors in Seel Street should it be given the go ahead.
