One killed in fratricide by CISF personnel at Indian Museum

In an incident of alleged fratricide, a personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on August 6 opened fire on his colleagues killing one inside the premises of Kolkata’s Indian Museum. Another CISF personnel sustained bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment at a State-run hospital.

The incident occurred around 6.30 p.m. near the Asutosh Centenary Hall of the Indian Museum complex.

The Kolkata Police mobilised a huge force inside the complex, which is a high-security zone, after the incident. The team included members of the combat force. Tension prevailed in the area for 90 minutes as armed personnel of Kolkata Police tried to convince the CISF personnel who had opened fire to lay down his arms. City Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal also reached the spot.

“About 6.30 p.m., we got information that there was firing inside the Indian Museum complex. Our combat team and DCP (Central) arrived at the spot and took control of the situation... We were able to convince, disarm and arrest him,” Mr. Goyal said.

The Commissioner said about 15 rounds were fired inside the museum complex. The CISF personnel killed was of the rank of Assistant Sub-Inspector while an officer of Assistant Commandant rank sustained injuries. The accused who opened fire was a Head Constable and was identified as Akshay Kumar Mishra.

Indian Museum is the oldest museum in the country with priceless artefacts including sculptures, archaeological specimens and an Egyptian Mummy. CISF has been deployed at the Indian Museum since December 2019.
