Cillian Murphy tipped as next James Bond as odds slashed on Peaky Blinders actor

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy is being tipped as the next James Bond as odds fall on the Irish actor following Daniel Craig's into 007's shoes.

William Hill says 28 Days Later star Murphy is now 16/1 to be the next James Bond, dropping from 28/1 a few days earlier. Other candidates being backed by bookies include current favourite, the Witcher star Henry Cavill, at 2/1, Bridgerton's Rege-Jean Page at 9/4 and former Wire and Luther actor Idris Elba at 9/2.

Murphy, 45, stars as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders, which is currently in its final season on BBC ahead of a planned movie. He has been tipped to replace Daniel Craig before, but told the Guardian in 2019 that he believes the next 007 should be a woman.

A William Hill spokesperson told Dublin Live : “It’s no surprise that Cillian Murphy is a good fit for the role, as his work on Peaky Blinders clearly showed that he’s no stranger to portraying a gritty role that touches on difficult themes. It’s also high time that we saw another Irish Bond enter the foray - after all, Pierce Brosnan played one of the best James Bond to date, so why not have Murphy pick up where Brosnan left off?”

Daniel Craig bowed out as Bond with last year's No Time to Die, his fifth movie of the long-running series about a British secret agent. He took over the role from Piers Brosnan.
