In a recent interview with GQ, actor Cillian Murphy shed some light on the fan-favorite status of the 2005 film Red Eye. Despite not considering it a good movie himself, Murphy acknowledged that the film's appeal lies in the duality of his character. Directed by Wes Craven, Red Eye is a psychological thriller that follows a hotel manager, played by Rachel McAdams, who is kidnapped by a charming domestic terrorist, portrayed by Murphy, aboard a red-eye flight.

Murphy explained that what attracted him to the role was the opportunity to portray a character with both good and evil sides. He relished the chance to make that turn and explore the complexity of his character. McAdams also chimed in, praising Murphy's performance and referring to the old adage that the nicest people can sometimes make the best villains. The two actors shared an enjoyable experience on set, bonding over music and crossword puzzles.

Despite their positive experiences, Murphy openly admitted that he doesn't believe Red Eye is a good movie. However, his perspective seems to differ from the general consensus. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, earning an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was celebrated for its solid performances and the tight direction from Craven. While it may not have reached the level of critical acclaim that some of Murphy's other projects have achieved, Red Eye was undoubtedly a success at the box office, grossing nearly $100 million.

It's important to consider Murphy's own high standards when evaluating his view of Red Eye. Throughout his career, he has worked with esteemed director Christopher Nolan on numerous occasions, starring in acclaimed films like The Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk, and the upcoming Oppenheimer. These collaborations have established Murphy's reputation as a versatile and talented actor.

However, Red Eye played an integral role in showcasing Murphy's range as an actor. Released shortly after his debut as Scarecrow in Batman Begins, the film solidified his reputation as a capable villain. Despite his reservations about its quality, Red Eye helped to shape Murphy's career and contributed to his versatility as an actor.

For fans of Red Eye, the film can still be enjoyed today. It is available for streaming on Paramount+ and MGM+. So, if you're in the mood for a fast-paced thriller with an exceptional performance from Cillian Murphy, give Red Eye a watch and decide for yourself whether it lives up to its fan-favorite status.
