Cider lorry 'explosion' closes major motorway

A cider lorry was destroyed after it burst into flames in a huge blaze that closed a major motorway this afternoon. The Westons Cider caught fire and closed down all four lanes of the M5 northbound carriageway near junction 20 for Clevedon.

Photos showed huge plumes of black smoke rising from the vehicle, although Avon and Somerset Police have said there are no reported injuries. A spokesperson from Westons Cider also said the driver is unharmed, reports Devon Live.

Following the incident, Darryl Hinksman, from Westons Cider, confirmed: "Yes, one of our vehicles did catch fire a couple of hours ago on the M5 near the exit for Clevedon. Thankfully, the driver is unharmed and as far as we are aware there are no reports of any other injuries; we are currently making arrangements to bring the driver home. This is quite a new vehicle and at the moment we have no idea as to the cause of the incident."

A spokesperson from Avon Fire and Rescue Service said. "A lorry carrying 50 empty kegs and three pallets of bottled cider was found well alight," a spokesperson said. "Firefighters used one high-pressure hose reel, two 45mm jets and gas monitors to extinguish the blaze."
