Ciara Mageean has announced that she will miss the remainder of the indoor athletic season due to a calf injury.
The two time Olympian sustained the injury back in January at a World indoor tour meeting in Manchester. On that occasion, Mageean won the 3,000 metres event, posting a time of 8:47.23.
"I am bitterly disappointed to share that I have decided to end my indoor season prematurely," Mageean wrote on Twitter this evening.
"During a brilliant season opener in January I managed to tear my calf."
"After careful consideration, myself and my coach felt it best to draw a line under this year's indoor season".
Mageean, who is now based in Manchester, came close to breaking the 3,000m Irish record set by Mary Cullen thirteen years ago. Cullen, who won a bronze medal at the European Athletics indoor championship back in 2009, holds the record with a time of 8:43.74.
The track star endured a very difficult 2021. A calf tear days before the Olympic Games hampered her performance in Tokyo, while the death of her former coach Jerry Kiernan back in April made preparing for the games even more difficult.
Mageean will miss the world Athletics indoor championships due to the injury, with the tournament set to take place from the 18th to the 20th of March.
