The recent resignation of former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has brought to light the Church of England's profound failure in safeguarding vulnerable individuals and addressing cases of abuse within its institutions. Welby stepped down after an independent review revealed that he failed to promptly report instances of physical and sexual abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps, allowing the abuse to continue for several years.

Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, acknowledged Welby's resignation as a necessary step but emphasized that it does not absolve the church of its broader safeguarding shortcomings. Victims and government officials have echoed similar sentiments, calling for greater accountability and transparency within the institution.

The Archbishop of Canterbury plays a significant role in the Church of England and the wider Anglican Communion, which comprises millions of members globally. Welby's departure has sparked discussions about his legacy, particularly in light of existing controversies surrounding issues such as gay rights and gender equality within the church.

A separate inquiry into John Smyth, a prominent figure accused of widespread abuse, further highlighted systemic failures within the Church of England. The report revealed that Welby had failed to report Smyth to authorities when first informed of the allegations, contributing to prolonged abuse and trauma for numerous victims.

While Welby's resignation has been seen as a step towards accountability, critics argue that more action is needed to address the underlying issues of safeguarding and transparency within the church. Calls for additional resignations and structural reforms have emerged, emphasizing the importance of creating a safer environment for all members of the church.

Despite efforts to improve safeguarding practices, concerns remain about the church's ability to address past failures and prevent future instances of abuse. The need for honesty, trust, and accountability in safeguarding procedures has been underscored, with many urging the church to engage in open dialogue and meaningful change.
