Impressed Jurgen Klopp is convinced his call to go with four forwards caught ragged Rangers cold during Liverpool's dominant win at Anfield.
The 55-year-old watched his side get their Champions League qualification bid back on track as they secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Scottish Premiership side. And his side's dominance was aided by the call to include four natural strikers in Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz. Liverpool cruised from start to finish and secured all three points thanks to a stunning strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold and an ice-cool penalty from Salah to seal all three points.
Liverpool know a win a second consecutive win over Rangers at Ibrox on matchday four will have them in pole position to progress from Group A alongside high-flying table topper Napoli. And the Reds boss was left grinning after his side's win - and his executive call to unleash a new formation to leave Gio Van Bronckhorst reeling. Speaking on BT Sport, the German said: "Good performance, top defending, in a new formation, sometimes you have to change things and it worked out tonight. It was a surprise for sure for Rangers, the way we set up. It was more an idea we get into the right spaces, we had that, 2-0, plenty of chances.
"Imagine we had used all of them? All of a sudden we could have softened the situation, that's not what we need at the moment, 2-0, I am more than happy, two set piece goals, I love as well, you can celebrate them without waiting for VAR, that's good. Really good game and really important."
Klopp was then asked how long his revised formation was in the works, and he admitted it hadn't been a long-term plan, rather a bid to find a spark. He added: "Just one session, actually. Of course, it's not more as we physically recover from the last game and we told the boys how we want to set it up, I thought we did particularly well. We had great moments, one moment, and we didn't do it more often is when Darwin (Nunez) cut the ball back. Unlucky in moments offensively, rock solid defensively, apart from the last few minutes after the corner.
"Rangers have a wee time to prepare for the next game, we obviously play Arsenal first, we go there (Ibrox) it will be a different game, and that is ok."
