Christy Dignam received an incredible send off in Finglas this morning as thousands of fans lined the streets to pay their respects.
The 63-year-old Aslan frontman died on Tuesday following a hard-fought battle with cancer. His funeral cortege travelled around his hometown this morning to allow fans to say goodbye ahead of his private funeral service.
The cortege began at the junction of Tolka Valley Road and Cardiffsbridge Road at 9:45am, and concluded at Erin Isle GAA Club shortly before 10:20am. Thousands of fans were awaiting the cortege at Erin Isle and a hugely emotional video tribute was played for the music legend.
The crowd broke into song after Christy's hearse arrived and finished the tribute by emotionally singing 'Crazy World' together. Fans at Erin Isle spoke to Dublin Live this morning about their sadness at Christy's passing.
One fan told us: "It's a sad day for Ireland, It's a sad day for the people of Finglas. We've lost an icon but his music and songs will last forever."
Another fan said: "I've been a fan for as long as I can remember. My parents were big fans. He's everything, he's my idol and he's my hero."
Christy will be laid to rest later this morning at a private funeral service. Imelda May, Finbar Furey, Bono, and Christy’s band mates from Aslan are some of the big names expected to attend the strictly private funeral.
Footballer Paul McGrath and RTE ’s Ryan Tubridy will also pay their respects at the ceremony which has been organised by Christy’s son-in-law, Darren.
