Christopher Nkunku signs new RB Leipzig contract despite transfer interest from Chelsea FC

Christopher Nkunku has signed a new two-year extension at RB Leipzig, seemingly putting an end to the transfer speculation that has surrounded him during the early part of the summer transfer window.

Coming off the back of a season in which the forward scored 35 goals in 50 appearances, the 24-year-old had been eyed by Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel looks to rebuild his attack following a difficult season.

One of a number of players to have thrived since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of first-team football, the French international had been also been linked with a return to his former club, along with Manchester United.

Earlier this month, Nkunku admitted interest from some of Europe’s biggest club was “flattering” and cited the 2022 World Cup as a major factor in any decision he would make on his future.

Now, he has signed a two-year contract extension, meaning he is under contract in Germany until the summer of 2026.

“I’m pleased to continue wearing the RB Leipzig shirt,” he told the club’s official website.

“After our great achievement in winning the DFB-Pokal, it remained clear that my story here isn’t over yet – we want more!

“I was really impressed with the club’s efforts to keep me, so a big thanks goes to those responsible for the trust in me and especially to Oliver Mintzlaff, with whom I was always in close contact.

“RB Leipzig have made a name for themselves on the international stage in recent years and have shown time and again that we can compete for titles. We want to build on that going forward and go one step further.”
