The festive season is upon us and with that comes the welcome return of Christmas markets.
With a host of stalls to browse and delicious food and drinks to enjoy - a day at the markets is the perfect way to get in the festive spirit. I took a trip to Chester to check out the city's markets - as well as doing a spot of Christmas shopping.
Chester is around a 40 minute drive from Liverpool and can also be easily accessed on the Merseyrail network. We opted to use the city's Park and Ride bus service on our visit, which takes you right into the city centre - just a short walk away from the festive markets.

Chester offers plenty of shops to choose from, making it an ideal choice for a Christmas shopping trip. Big name brands such as Zara, Marks and Spencer and Primark are nestled amongst independent boutiques and stores. The city is steeped in history, with Chester Cathedral, the City Walls and Roman Ampitheatre in close proximity to the shops and restaurants.
The Christmas markets are located on Northgate Street, just outside Chester Town Hall and are open until December 21. Arriving in Chester, I was instantly struck by how festive the city looked - the streets were lit up beautifully, complimenting the traditional feel of the historic city.
There is a real mix of stalls at the markets, with each of the huts covered in beautiful lights and decorations, adding to the magical, festive atmosphere. There was plenty of food and drink to choose from to suit all tastes and appetites - all of the food stalls smelled incredible, which added to the atmosphere of the markets. Those who want to enjoy a drink can pick up a festive mulled wine or warming hot drink from one of the stalls or head into the Christmas gin and rum bar, which proved popular with visitors.
You are spoiled for choice in terms of gifts and decorations. Chester's markets are full of unique gifts from a wonderful selection of businesses. The markets are a great choice for those looking for a special gift for a loved one, with options including jewellery, candles and bath products.
A real stand out was the impressive Christmas tree, which is located in the middle of the stalls and adorned with stunning gold lights. I left feeling well and truly in the Christmas spirit after finishing off a day of Christmas shopping with a trip to the markets. I'd definitely recommend taking a trip to this beautiful city over the festive season.
