Christmas bin collection dates in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset

As Christmas is just around the corner, December is full of important dates to remember, and with the current popularity of widespread industrial action, there is almost a dizzying number to keep track of.

However, even with all the disruption that’s happening at the moment, there is one vital detail which must not be overlooked during the festive season, lest it ruin the start of your New Year, and that is when to put the rubbish out for collection.

As with every year, in 2022, there will be no rubbish collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. With Christmas Day and New Years' day falling on Sundays, the changes to your regular scheduled bin service shouldn’t be too radical. However, it will depend on where you live and your regular collection date.

There’s no need to panic, though; Bristol Live has collected the information for all four local authorities together in one handy page. So now all you need to worry about is….everything else.

In Bristol, rubbish pickup dates will shift to one day later than your regular collection for the weeks beginning Monday December 26 and Monday January 2, returning to normal for the week starting Monday January 9.

So if your normal day is Monday, then for those two weeks, it will be Tuesday, while for Tuesdays, it will move to Wednesdays etc. Standard Friday collections will shift to Saturday for that fortnight.

Residents can look at Bristol Waste Collection’s site to view and print out a timetable that shows their dates over the Christmas/New year period and dates for Christmas tree pickups.

South Gloucestershire

In South Gloucestershire, bin collection dates are affected only on the week beginning Monday December 26, and regular service resumes on Monday, January 2.

For residents in the week after Christmas, their normal bin collection date is shifted one day later. So if your normal day would have been Monday Dec 26, the revised day will be been Tuesday, Dec 27.

Likewise, if your normal day would be Tuesday December 27, the revised day will be Wednesday 28, while collections on Friday 30 will move to Saturday 31.

From Monday 2 January 2023 collections will be back to normal.

The region’s Sort it recycling centres will be closed on December 25, 26 and January 1, but will be open as usual from December 27 to 31 if you need an outing.

For recycling Christmas trees, there are several options available. Those with a garden waste subscription and a tree under six feet tall can put it in their green bin or cut it up if it is taller.

Or a garden waste sack can be bought for £2.50 from One Stop Shops or a South Gloucestershire Library and attached to a tree with no-plastic string to be picked up after requesting a one-off garden waste collection .

Trees can also be recycled at our recycling centres , and in some areas, you can book a real Christmas tree collection with St Peter’s Hospice for a donation.

The council will be putting Christmas recycling tips on its StreetCare Facebook page.

North Somerset

In North Somerset, it’s a similar shift, but standard collections resume earlier on Monday January 2. This means that if your normal day would have been Monday Dec 26, the revised day will be Tuesday, Dec 27. And likewise, if your normal day would be Tuesday December 27, the revised day will be Wednesday December 28 etc. While collections on Friday December 30 will move to Saturday December 31.

North Somerset council doesn’t have much information available online yet, but it is possible to view your next two impending collection dates by inputting your postcode on their calendar landing page.

Bath and NE Somerset

Meanwhile, Bath and NE Somerset council have no shortage of info for residents to stay in the loop with their bins. In this region, collections normally scheduled from December 26 to January 6 are affected, and the revised day is two days later for the week in December and one day later for the week in January.

So if your normal collection day is Monday December 26 your revised day will be Wednesday the 28th. Rubbish pickups that usually occur on Tuesday December 27 will shift to Thursday December 29 etc.

For Friday, December 30, the day moves to Monday, January 2, while if your normal day is Monday, January 2, the revised date will be Tuesday, January 3. It continues that way for the rest of the week until Friday January 6, which moves to Saturday January 7.

The council has produced this handy chart that can be printed out from its website:

For Bath NES, garden waste collections will pause between December 5 and January 15. Waste can instead be brought to the council’s recycling centres during opening hours, though it's worth remembering that centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Real Christmas trees can be recycled at the council’s recycling centres or put out for collection from January 16. Collections can be booked in advance here , and trees that have not been booked will not be collected. All recycled trees must be stripped of decorations and cut in half to be less than 1.2m tall.

Residents can also head over to the council’s Recycle For Bathnes Facebook page, which will feature a 12-day ‘Countdown to Christmas’ for more tips on how to reduce waste this Christmas,
