Christmas 2022 bin collection dates: When rubbish and recycling will be collected in Newport

Christmas always brings more waste than usual as people dispose of leftover Christmas dinners, wrapping paper and more. But the festive period will mean changes to your normal collections as well as some alterations to when you can visit the recycling centre.

The likes of Cardiff have already announced changes to its bin collections and waste services in the coming weeks and Newport is no different. There are also changes to one-off collections for people disposing of Christmas trees over the period as well as reductions to council services and cemetery opening times.

Here are all the changes to waste collection dates, Christmas tree pickups and recycling centre opening times over Christmas in Newport. You can get more Newport news and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

Recycling and waste collections

As both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Sunday this year, all council and Wastesavers collection days will remain unchanged. You can check collection days on the council website here by entering your postcode. You must make sure your bins and boxes are on the kerbside outside your property by 6am on the day of collection.

Christmas trees and garden waste collections

The last garden waste collections of 2022 took place between Monday November 21 and Friday December 2 and will resume the week beginning February 27 2023, so they will not be happening over Christmas. Green waste can be taken to the household waste recycling centre until collections resume. Garden waste (orange lidded) bins are provided free of charge by the council to any domestic household with a garden. Residents must use their orange-lidded bin for garden waste only and make sure it is out for collection by 7am on collection days.

The council will not be collecting Christmas trees over the festive period. Real Christmas trees can be recycled at the household recycling centre in Newport and you can book an appointment here. Otherwise you can cut up your tree and store it in the garden waste bin until collections resume in the spring. The household recycling centre is located on Docks Way in Maesglas, Newport NP20 2N at the entrance of the landfill site off the SDR roundabout.

When is the recycling centre open over Christmas?

This year the household recycling centre will be closed on December 25 and 26 and January 1 only. It will operate its usual opening hours throughout the rest of the Christmas period, between 7.30am and 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. No unsorted mixed waste is allowed and black bags must not contain any recycling. Materials collected via household collections should not be brought to the site, but excess green waste and cardboard can be brought in providing they are pre-sorted.

When are the cemeteries open over Christmas?

The cemetery office will close Friday December 23 and reopen from Wednesday December 28 to 30. It will also be closed on Monday January 2 and reopen on Tuesday January 3. Faith burial provision will be unavailable on December 25 and 26 and on January 1. The parks and cemetery site gates will remain open for all visitors from Christmas Eve through to the January 2 when locking will recommence.

Gwent Crematorium will close on Friday December 23 and reopen from 28 to 30 December before being closed on Monday January 2 and reopening January 3.

How can I contact the council over Christmas?

The contact centre this year will be open until December 23 before being closed until December 28. It will be open until December 30 with normal working hours and closed on January 2. It will reopen as normal on January 3.
