Christina Aguilera has opened up on the "chaotic" environment she dealt with as a child and how it has helped her throughout her career.
The Dirrty singer, 41, spoke on Thursday as she accepted the Spirit of Hope award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. She confessed that her turbulent childhood helped set her up for what to expect in the industry and said she made a promise to herself to use her "voice and position for something deeper than just making records".
The singer-turned-actress continued: "I wanted my songs to have a genuine purpose and meaning. Having grown up in an environment that was chaotic, I realised that sharing my story was vital in connecting with others who may struggle to have a voice themselves.
"From there, I discovered that the messages, lessons and stories from my songs are one of the greatest gifts I could offer."
She went on to say she has always tried to navigate her career using "integrity and purpose" and said she continues to "listen to my heart" in a bid to help others.
"It means so much to me to grow together with my fans through the years through authenticity and compassion with issues relating to equality, domestic violence, self love and much, much more," she said.
The singer added how proud she is at work she's been involved with that has been carried out in a bid to make the world a better place. "All of these things together are what remind me of my core values and empower me to continue being the best person I can be."
Earlier this month, Christina decided to unfollow Britney Spears after the Toxic singer seemingly 'fat-shamed' her former backing dancers in an Instagram rant.
Britney, 40, initially wrote: "I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my children … my dancers … I mean if I had Christina Aguilera's dancers I would have looked extremely small. I mean why not talk about it ?? Don't you think my confidence would have been a bit better if I could choose where I lived, ate, whom I called on the phone, dated and who was on stage with me!
"It's hard sometimes now I see how much of my womanhood was stripped away at that time and every person sat back and didn't say a thing! Anyways… I will be here talking bout things people NEVER talked about."
Following Christina unfollowing her and a number of online users criticising her words, Britney clarified she didn't mean to be critical.
