Chris Christie on Sunday hit back at Donald Trump in response to the former president’s recent jabs regarding the New Jersey former governor’s weight.
“Oh, like he’s some Adonis?,” Christie quipped as he called Trump “a bully on the schoolyard” in an interview with Fox News.
Christie had criticized Trump for the handling of classified documents. The former president pleaded not guilty to 37 counts in a federal courtroom in Miami.
Earlier this month, Trump took to Truth Social to target Christie’s weight in response to the former governor’s New Hampshire speech. “How many times did Chris Christie use the word SMALL? Does he have a psychological problem with SIZE? Actually, his speech was SMALL, and not very good”, wrote Trump.
The GOP presidential candidate has underscored that his enduring battle with weight-related challenges should not be seen as a factor in determining his qualifications for the presidency.
“Here’s my message to him: I don’t care what he says about me, and I don’t care what he thinks about me, and he should take a look in the mirror every once in a while — maybe he’d drop the weight thing off of his list of criticisms.”
Former president, who is the front-runner in the GOP presidential nomination, and Christie have aimed a number of attacks at each other as the race to the White House gains steam.
On Thursday, Trump labeled Christie as someone with “a lot of hatred” and said he “never trusted” him. Earlier this week, Christie, at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference, also attacked Trump but ended up being booed.
“People understand that folks need to take responsibility for what they do. And my message to the folks of Faith and Freedom, which did get some good reaction, too, but of course, I expected the boos,” said Christie in an interview with ABC host Jonathan Karl. “That is predominantly a Trump crowd, but they need to hear the truth to that. You know, character is the single most important element of a president of the United States, because you can’t know what every, every issue is going to come across the president’s desk.”
The former New Jersey governor was expecting boos at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference when criticizing Trump.
Trump is currently leading the GOP nomination that includes a list of candidates including Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, and many others.
The former president had thrived in his fundraising efforts since his state indictment by the Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg over the hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels.
When asked about the FBI search in the summer of 2022 at Mar-A-Lago for the classified documents, the former New Jersey gave a response from his point of view.
“It’s fair game, and you just have to display probable cause to a federal judge that there are contents that you have reasonably — there are contents in that safe that would assist in proving a violation of the law,” said Christie in response to the raid.
Christie was a former federal prosecutor prior to his career in politics.
