Christian McCaffrey nearing record matched only by 2 Hall of Famers

In perhaps the least shocking news of the week leading up to the 49ers and Eagles NFC championship game rematch, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is approaching NFL history.

One week after he set the 49ers franchise record for rushing touchdowns when he posted his 11th of the season in a Week 12 win over the Seahawks, McCaffrey will have a chance to once again etch his name into the NFL history books.

Per the NFL, “with a rushing touchdown on Sunday, McCaffrey will join Pro Football Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk and Lenny Moore as the only players in NFL history with at least 50 rushing touchdowns and 25 touchdown receptions.”

McCaffrey has 49 rushing touchdowns and 27 receiving touchdowns in his career. Saints RB Alvin Kamara is also on the cusp of those 50/25 benchmarks. He’s at 51 rushing touchdowns and 23 receiving scores.

Last season McCaffrey was responsible for the 49ers’ lone touchdown in the NFC championship game when he scored on a brilliant run that featured a slew of broken tackles.

With rain prominently in the forecast, McCaffrey figures to play a big role for the 49ers on Sunday in Philadelphia. Given that he has touchdowns in 18 of his last 19 games, it may be more surprising if he doesn’t snag a rushing TD than if he does. Either way, McCaffrey will join Faulk and Moore in the 50/25 club sooner than later.
