Christian Eriksen responds to being compared to Paul Scholes at Man Utd

Christian Eriksen is playing some of the best football of his career at Manchester United and has even earned comparisons with a Red Devils legend in former fellow midfielder Paul Scholes.

The Danish international made the move to Old Trafford this summer as a free agent following the end of his six-month contract with fellow Premier League outfit Brentford. Eriksen signed for United 13 months after he suffered an on-pitch cardiac arrest while playing for his country at Euro 2020.

Things have gone better than many would have expected, with Eriksen named in the starting line-up for every single one of United's Premier League fixtures so far this term. Manager Erik ten Hag has placed a huge amount of trust in the midfielder, who is repaying him in some fashion so far.

Danish outlet Politiken discussed the fact that upon his arrival in Manchester, Eriksen was actually dubbed 'a new ageing Juan Mata', but is now being compared to Old Trafford icon Scholes just six games into his United career.

"It’s football in a nutshell and shows how fast it is,” Eriksen told the Denmark newspaper. "Of course, it is great to be compared to them, but you create your own ways and your own name. I was lucky that I managed to play against Paul Scholes. He was a good player, so I’m happy to be compared to him."

The playmaker was of course no stranger to anyone who tunes into the Premier League having spent seven years at Tottenham Hotspur from 2013 to 2020. With that being said, Eriksen has since explained what it feels like to play for a club of United's stature.

"Like everyone else, I’ve previously been one of those sitting and reading about what happened in United. It is a huge club, and no one in the world does not know about the brand United."

While morale is high among the United dressing room now after a four-game winning run in the league, it was a very contrasting feeling after two defeats from their opening two games.

The second loss came away at Brentford in a contest that saw the Bees run riot, putting four past United with no reply. Eriksen certainly had a game to forget, but now feels he is a lot closer to finding his feet in the famous red shirt.

"During that period we were probably searching – also for my own part. I played many different positions in a very short time. First a little striker and then down in defensive midfield.

"In recent matches, I have played as an 8, and it suits me very well. It’s great that we’ve come back on top with wins, which have been good for us and created a bit of confidence."
