Christian Eriksen potentially in line to make Brentford debut against Newcastle United this weekend

Christian Eriksen could be in line to make his Brentford debut against Newcastle United this weekend.

The Danish midfielder has not played competitively since suffering a cardiac arrest at EURO 2020 last year.

But with the Bees sharing social media footage of Eriksen once again gracing the pitch in a number of behind closed doors games, the midfielder could be in the squad for this weekend's clash against United.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has hinted that the 30-year-old is stepping up his return to match fitness, with the game against Newcastle this weekend a potential chance to hand him his debut.

“Christian looked good in the 60 minutes he played [against Southend], looking good in training, he feels well, and is in a good place,” said Frank last week.

“He’s been out for seven months, normally you need a proper pre-season to get it going.

“He came to us with a good foundation, so he doesn’t need six weeks.

“We have another good opponent for a friendly game on Monday behind closed doors, that will be really beneficial for him.

“We are aiming for the Newcastle game, that’s the aim.”

It is also worth noting Eriksen is the cover star for the Bees match day programme this weekend, potentially hinting at his inclusion in the squad.

The Magpies will have to watch the Dane with a close eye despite the events of last year, having only just collected a Serie A winners medal back with Inter in 2021.

Eriksen left Spurs for Milan back in 2020 and has racked up over 350+ senior appearances throughout his club career thus far.
