Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has revealed his shirt number wasn’t entirely his pick after his move to Old Trafford, whilst he has named new colleague Casemiro as the best midfielder at the club.
The Danish playmaker completed a free transfer to United over the summer having left Premier League rivals Brentford at the conclusion of his short-term contract. He has impressed at Old Trafford, making 20 appearances in all competitions and chalking up six assists.
Eriksen also opened his goalscoring account for the club just before the break for the World Cup with the opener in a 2-1 victory over Fulham.
His shirt number selection was certainly a surprising choice considering that the Dane had never donned the digits at all in his career, instead wearing the likes of Nos.8, 21, 23 and 24. However, the midfielder has revealed that he did not make the decision but instead left it down to his son.
Speaking to United's official website, he said: “I didn’t pick it [the shirt], my son picked it! We had a few options, a few numbers and I wrote him a list of the numbers available, and he picked number 14.”
Whilst Eriksen has caught the eye during his relatively short time at Old Trafford, the same can certainly be said of fellow summer arrival Casemiro. The Brazilian completed a big-money switch from Real Madrid and has established himself as a key player under Erik ten Hag, biding his time before forcing his way into the starting XI.

He has caught the eye so much that Eriksen has named him the best midfielder at the club. “It's very different, every player has a different style, everyone has different abilities,” he continued.
“At Man United, I would probably have to say Casemiro. He’s won about 20 Champions Leagues already, so it should be him!”
Eriksen’s assessment is one that has already been given approval from Brazil superstar Neymar. In the aftermath of Casemiro’s winning goal against Switzerland in the World Cup, the Paris Saint-Germain forward hailed his international teammate.
Taking to Instagram after the game, he wrote: “Casemiro has been the best midfielder in the world for a long time.”
Eriksen and Casemiro are back in action this week in their final group fixtures in Qatar. The latter’s Brazil side take on Cameroon having already booked their place in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Denmark clash with Australia on Wednesday needing a win to progress having taken just one point from their opening two matches.
