Christian Eriksen latest as Tottenham do not follow up interest in transfer return

Tottenham have not followed up their interest yet over a free transfer for Christian Eriksen this summer, football.london understands.

Spurs have been linked with making a move for the 30-year-old Denmark international to return to the club, particularly following comments during the season from Antonio Conte stating that he would like to see the midfielder back at Tottenham. Eriksen's return to football has been a successful one with Brentford, with a string of impressive performances less than a year after the cardiac arrest he suffered at the Euros last year.

Tottenham, Brentford and Manchester United have all been linked with having the Dane in their team next season, but those within Spurs are now suddenly distancing themselves from any talk of discussions involving Eriksen.

football.london understands that Spurs were in contact with Eriksen's camp about a potential return just a couple of weeks ago but have not followed that up since, with United, Everton, Newcastle, Leicester, West Ham, Brentford also having made contact about the midfielder, as well as Ajax and one unnamed La Liga side.

With his family settled in London, there had been some suggestions that the Dane was initially keen to remain in the capital, but that is not thought to be the only case at this point with so many options on the table for the experienced Premier League midfielder.

Spurs have attempted to re-sign the Dane before, enquiring with Inter about a loan return when he was not getting into the Italian side's starting XI on a regular basis. However, he then won Antonio Conte over and starting almost every match from February 2021 onwards, they won the Serie A title together.

The Spurs head coach had spoken about his desire to bring Eriksen back to north London during the season.

“For sure, to work again with Christian would be a fantastic opportunity. I enjoyed the time we spent together in Inter Milan, despite the first time he didn’t play regularly with me," he said, "but then when I understood what I wanted about him then he played. We won together a title, the league in Italy. When you have this type of player, a great player, a good man, I think every manager, every coach, likes to work with them."

football.london understands that Spurs' managing director of football Fabio Paratici also attempted to sign Eriksen on a number of occasions when he was at Juventus and has been in contact with the Dane's camp since the end of the season about a return to north London this summer. However, the word coming out of Tottenham now seems to be downplaying any potential comeback for the midfielder.

Eriksen, who is now on holiday following his international duty, is understood not to have made his mind up yet with plenty of options to choose from for his next destination.
