Christian Eriksen explains ‘perfect’ Man Utd transfer after Tottenham and Brentford interest

Christian Eriksen has described his Manchester United move as “perfect” having sealed a three-year contract with the club. It comes after the former Tottenham playmaker was linked with a return to north London this summer.

However, that move failed to materialise as Antonio Conte looked to other targets in the market. The Italian has made quick work of that too, signing five players so far, while football.london understands an agreement has been met for Middlesbrough’s young full-back Djed Spence to become number six.

The additions have added extra security to the backline, the midfield and the attack. However, an area of concern remains to be creativity from midfield, something most thought Eriksen could solve with a return and a reunion with Conte.

The head coach could have signed the Dane back in January as a free agent, but he eventually joined Brentford, where he impressed on a short six-month deal. Asked whether he regretted missing out on signing him then, Conte said: “Honestly, no one knew the possibility of Christian coming back to football. It was a surprise for everybody.

"I think in this respect, Brentford was very good to understand the situation and to go into the situation, and to sign Christian. I'm really surprised but I'm not the only person surprised to see him playing in this way.”

The 30-year-old went on to make 11 Premier League appearances for the Bees last season, scoring once and assisting four as he worked his way back into football again. While there was interest elsewhere, he has now signed a three-year deal with Manchester United.

Speaking to the official website, he said: “Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started. I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.

“I have seen Erik’s [ten Hag] work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach. Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future.

“I still have major ambitions in the game, there is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey.” It may be a move that could deal a huge blow to Spurs later down the road, however Eriksen is prepared for a new challenge under a familiar face.
