Chrissy Teigen's house has been dissected time and time again. It seems with each new Instagram post, a new corner of the model and media personality's mid-century modern home, which she shares with husband John Legend, is delightfully revealed. Our latest fixation? Her '70s-inspired home bar – designed by H&G favorite, Jake Arnold.
Moody and retro, Chrissy's home bar is decorated by Grammys and various other shiny accolades (also a glimpse into what it's like to date an award-winning musician). They perfectly complement the bronze swirly decals on the walls, the marble countertop, and, most notably, the matching gold backsplash and stools.
'The 1970s era represents a time of vibrant and bold design choices,' says designer Elizabeth Grace. 'The resurgence of this trend may be driven by a sense of nostalgia, as people seek to recreate the glamorous and opulent aesthetics of that decade.'
While gold is certainly synonymous with 70s opulence, gold is versatile within modern-leaning homes – especially if your goal is refinement.
'Gold accents bring warmth and a touch of glamour to any space,' says Elizabeth. 'The reflective qualities of gold create a sense of luxury and can instantly elevate the ambiance of a room, making it an appealing choice for those looking to make a statement.'
A wet bar like Chrissy and John's, while fabulous, isn't a staple in every home, but there are plenty of ways to incorporate its signature gold into your house. Elizabeth recommends starting with accent pieces, like vases, picture frames, candle holders, or decorative objects for some subtle shimmer.
'A gold-framed mirror or a chandelier with gold detailing can add a touch of luxury and create a stunning visual impact,' she says.
When decorating with gold, we can also look to wall treatments ('opt for wallpaper or paint with gold patterns or metallic finishes. A feature wall or an entire room with gold accents can become a striking centerpiece.') and soft furnishings like throw pillows and rugs.
If silver is a personal preference, go ahead and break the rules – mixing metals is encouraged.
'Don't be afraid to mix gold with other metals like brass or silver,' Elizabeth says. 'This can add depth and visual interest to your space while creating a balanced and eclectic aesthetic.'
