Chris Wood explains 'fantastic' Nottingham Forest transfer decision

Chris Wood was delighted to open his Nottingham Forest account, having been keen to “be part of something that is different” when he made the decision to join the club.

The striker clinched a vital point for the Reds as he came off the bench to net an equaliser against Manchester City on Saturday. It came after a purchase obligation clause in his loan deal from Newcastle United had been triggered by the three previous starts he had made for Steve Cooper’s side.

There was the lure of potentially being involved in this weekend’s Carabao Cup final with the Magpies, had Wood remained at St James’ Park. The 31-year-old will still be at Wembley to support his former teammates, the day after Forest’s clash with West Ham United, but has no regrets about making the move south.

“This goal was a nice consolation,” he said, amid talk about the cup final. “I’m here to play football and be part of something that is different.

“I’ve decided to move down here and be part of this fantastic club. Yes, it would have been nice to have played at Wembley but I will be there supporting them (Newcastle).

“It would be nice to receive a winners’ medal, but regardless I will be there supporting them because they have done fantastically well this season as a team, as a club. I’ve got good mates who are still there.

“Any goal is a nice goal for a striker, I’ll take them. It’s a great point especially against a side like that. It’s nice to give one back to the fans, definitely.”

Wood finished off a superb 19-pass move involving all 11 Reds players to make it 1-1 at the City Ground, cancelling out Bernardo Silva’s opener. He had a bit of a wait before he could properly celebrate, however, as VAR checked for a potential offside.

“To be fair, I thought I was alright. I thought maybe Morgs (Gibbs-White) would have been offside but I guess they checked both of us,” said the front man, who received a round of applause from the Forest dressing room after the match.

“They checked me quite thoroughly by the looks of it. Thankfully it was fine.”
