Former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder made his pitch to Aberdeen as he bids to become the next manager at Pittodrie.
Record Sport understands the vastly experienced Yorkshireman, who has been out of work since being axed by Championship club Middlesbrough in October, held talks with new Dons chief executive Alan Burrows in the Granite. City. Wilder, 55, took Sheffield United into the English Premier League in 2019 and to ninth in their first season in the top flight.
But he was axed in March 2021 with the Blades bottom of the league and is looking to rebuild his career after the Boro job didn’t work out. Wilder attended last weekend’s Old Firm Viaplay Cup final to get a first-hand feel of Scottish football and believes he is the man to revive the Dons’ fortunes. Interim boss Barry Robson, who has guided Aberdeen to fifth, remains very much in contention to land the job on a permanent basis.
Meanwhile, Graeme Shinnie has warned the Aberdeen support that a smoke bomb thrown on to the Tannadice pitch on Saturday night could have had catastrophic consequences if it had hit Dons kid Ryan Duncan.
The red smoking pyrotechnic was hurled from the visiting support in the main stand, just missing Duncan. Captain Shinnie said: “It’s a tough one because the supporters want to celebrate but we also want to be safe.
“I’m sure no one wanted to hit him with it and I’m guessing it was from our own support. It’s what the supporters seem to do. It would have been catastrophic if it hit him obviously and we don’t want to encourage it.”
Aberdeen chiefs have vowed to work with police to identify the missile yobs who hurled coins from the Tannadice stands at former Dons boss Jim Goodwin. A club statement said: “Enquiries have begun and we are working together with Dundee United and Police Scotland. If and when the culprits are identified, they will be dealt with by both the club and the authorities.”
