A deer stag knocked down by a car near the Gortin Glen Forest Park in Co Tyrone has made a full recovery after the help of some caring locals.
Chris the deer was hit on a roadside near the forest park at the end of January before being discovered by a local walker.
Volunteer group for the park Friends of the Glens were contacted, and Chris was brought to a nearby vet where he recived treatment before being cared for by local volunteers.
Sean Harpur from Friends of the Glens shared the update, and was delighted to report that Chris was now back amongst his companions.
“I was contacted by a local resident who found him when out walking,” Sean said.
“They contacted our Facebook page and we linked in with Strule Vets, Newtownstewart, PSNI, Council and Friends of the Glens.
“Everyone worked together until the deer was safe in the hut in the deer enclosure within the park.
“After the deer had been given veterinary treatment, Friends of the Glens volunteers cared for the deer for over a week.
“We are delighted to report that Chris the deer is now roaming free in the enclosure having made a great recovery.”
Sean said it was a great community effort to look after the animal and see him through his recovery.
He added: “It was a whole community effort, there were vets involved, local people, volunteer groups such as ourselves, the local council and park management.
“The vet had said he only had a 50/50 chance of surviving so it is a credit to all involved that he is still here.”
