Chris Sutton rubbishes Ally McCoist Rangers rescheduling plea as he points to Ibrox strength in depth

Chris Sutton has rubbished Ally McCoist’s claims that the SPFL should help Rangers’ Champions League quest by postponing league fixtures.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side beat Union Saint Gilloise to set up a playoff round showdown with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV Eindhoven with the first leg to take place at Ibrox next Tuesday. Gers legend McCoist has called on the league authorities to give his former club - and others - a helping hand by postponing league matches preceding big continental nights.

The Light Blues travel to the capital to face Hibs on Saturday, August 20. They the travel to the Netherlands four days later for the second leg and McCoist floated the idea of Rangers being given a free run between their playoff clashes, just as the Dutch FA have afforded PSV. They were due to play Volendam on the same day Rangers take on the Hibees, but that has been shelved to aid their Champions League ambitions.

But Sutton scoffed at suggestions Rangers need a weekend off, and pointed to the names they had on their bench against Union as evidence. He told BT Sport’s Football Extra: “Let me just read you the Rangers bench from the other night to tell you their strength in depth: “Matondo, Morelos, Davis, Kamara, Wright, King, McCrorie, Yilmaz, Sakala, McGregor, Davies, Jack. They all need game time!

‘What are you moaning about? You're just moaning for moaning’s sake! I can't be doing with people whingeing when there’s ample time in between for Rangers to rest. What is wrong with you?"

But McCoist hit back, telling Sutton he was “obsessed” with Rangers. He said: “You've taken it upon yourself to name the Rangers bench for some reason. I’m not talking about Rangers, I’m talking about Scottish football clubs.

“I didn’t mention Rangers. You're obsessed with Rangers, Christopher! Take Rangers out of the equation. I know Rangers are the biggest deal in Scottish football, but I'm talking about Scottish football in general. I’m talking about Motherwell, I'm talking about St Johnstone, I’m talking about Aberdeen, I‘m talking about Dundee United. I’m even talking about Celtic, Christopher!”

But Sutton wasn’t finished: “You only said what you said because Rangers had been drawn against PSV and them not having a game that weekend. Rangers haven’t even complained and you are! What is wrong with you?

“Just get on with it. Rangers have a big squad.”
