Chris Sutton raises alarm over Celtic’s squad depth after Rangers’ derby win

Celtic legend Chris Sutton has raised concerns over the depth of Celtic’s squad following their dramatic 3-2 loss to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

The runaway league leaders felt the absence of key players, including Callum McGregor, Liam Scales, Auston Trusty, James Forrest, and Paulo Bernardo, all of whom were missing from the derby clash at Celtic Park.

Sutton, a longtime figure in Celtic’s history, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his worries about the growing gap in squad options for the Hoops.

“One concern for Celtic is a couple of injuries, and the bench looks pretty bare,” Sutton stated.

Celtic failed to replace star striker Kyogo Furuhashi, who joined Rennes during the winter transfer window.

The Japanese forward’s departure left a significant gap in Celtic’s attacking options, which has become even more apparent during a period where Adam Idah has struggled to regularly find the net.

Sutton also reflected on the match itself, calling it a “superb advert for the Scottish game,” and praising Rangers’ Hamza Igamane for a “superbly taken goal” that “deserved to win any game.”

However, Sutton emphasised that despite the loss, Celtic still hold a commanding position at the top of the table.

“The bottom line is the gap at the top is 13 points with 8 games left. I know who I’d rather be,” Sutton wrote.

“Fair play to Rangers who play well when the pressure and expectation isn’t on them.”
