Chris Sutton has posed the question: Why wouldn't Anthony Gordon want to play for Scotland?
The former Celtic striker believes the Newcastle United attacker should seriously consider switching international allegiances to Steve Clarke's side ahead of Euro 2024.
The Scots have automatically qualified for the major tournament in Germany next summer.
Gordon is currently an England Under-21 international, so is clearly in the thoughts of those in power at the FA, including Gareth Southgate.
However, as Sutton points out, when even Raheem Sterling isn't getting a call-up, then competition for places is extremely stiff.
Gordon is one of a number of Newcastle players who are eligible to play for Scotland. Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento are all also under consideration by Clarke.
Sutton said on the It's All Kicking Off podcast: "The fact Anthony Gordon's played for England Under 21s is a big deal. But the longer he goes - and the position which he plays in is a really competitive position, normally off the left-hand side for Newcastle, but you've got Raheem Sterling, for example, [who] can't get in the squad.
"Would we think at this moment in time he is ahead of Anthony Gordon in the pecking order? Yes, we would. So as the years go on, then of course, Anthony Gordon will have thinking to do. From his perspective, it must be about him seeing himself to progress in the near future with England. Otherwise, why wouldn't he want to go and play for Scotland in a major tournament?
"Scotland have already qualified for the Euros, so it'll be interesting to see whether Gareth makes a decision on Anthony Gordon quickly or whether Anthony Gordon thinks, 'do you know what, sod it, I want to play in the Euros, I'll go and play'. And I don't think we could argue with him to make that decision. So that's food for thought, isn't it, for Anthony Gordon?
"He had a difficult time, didn't he? Leaving Everton under a cloud and, you know, a lot of attention on him, he looked to be sort of a young man with a really fiery temper. But Eddie Howe's got him playing well on the pitch for Newcastle. That's the most important thing and he's progressing nicely. So from his perspective, he's in a good place right now and eventually he'll have a decision to make with regards to who his allegiances are for international level."
