Celtic hero Chris Sutton and Rangers legend Ally McCoist enjoyed a laugh over the latter unintentionally running out of superlatives for the Hoops despite his Gers ties in the preview for the upcoming Champions League ties.
Celtic have garnered one point from their opening two clashes in their first group stage outing for five years; the Hoops will be considering themselves unlucky for not taking the lead against Real Madrid in the first half on gameweek one and will undoubtedly be kicking themselves for failing to take advantage of pure dominance away at Shakhtar Donetsk the week after. Rangers, meanwhile, directed a horror show at the hands of Ajax in their first return to Europe's top table since their plummet to League Two before somewhat challenging Napoli prior to a 3-0 loss in Govan.
With McCoist and Sutton previewing on BT Sport ahead of the clashes against RB Leipzig and European giants Liverpool, Sutton caught McCoist unawares by calling him out over his praise for Celtic - before the Scottish legend hit back by putting the former Blackburn striker in his place with a hilarious quip.
“It’s a tremendous game, make no mistake about it. I keep saying it, the fact that we have now got two teams in the Champions League group stage is brilliant,” McCoist said.
“I though Celtic had two good performances, certainly in the first half against Real Madrid and a good performance against Shakhtar.”
Sutton then dived in with a chirpy Celtic-related jibe which many thought would have annoyed the Gers hero, stating: “We’re talking about Rangers now Ally, we don’t have to keep referring back to Celtic for the standards which have been set!”
McCoist perfectly chimed back, however, leaving Sutton in stitches.
“It will give me great pleasure to move back to Rangers as you’re about to hear Chris!”, he continued. “ Rangers, on the other hand, after a very disappointing performance in Amsterdam, did very well against Napoli. I think the sending off killed the game, I think once Sands goes it was very difficult to play a team of that quality.
Sutton had the last laugh though my mocking Rangers’ perceived influx of penalties on home turf. He added: “Were you surprised to see a couple of penalties awarded at Ibrox for the opposition? That can’t have happened for the last 100 years!”
Rangers travel to Liverpool on Tuesday night before Celtic take a trip to Leipzig on Wednesday evening.
