Coldplay have cancelled eight shows in Brazil after announcing frontman Chris Martin has a "serious lung infection".

The band have postponed their dates in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo stadiums until early next year and have said they are “optimistic” of the singer’s recovery in time.

The postponed gigs were set to be from October 11 to 22 as part of the South America leg of the Music of the Spheres tour - which took them to Wembley Stadium over the summer.

A statement read: “Due to a serious lung infection, Chris has been put under strict doctor's orders to rest for the next three weeks.

"With deep regret, we've been forced to postpone our upcoming shows in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo until early 2023.

"[We are] working as fast as possible to lock in the new dates. We're optimistic that Chris will return to good health after the prescribed medical break and look forward to resuming the tour as soon as possible.”

The band added that those who had booked their place in the arena tour should hold onto their tickets.

Ten sold out nights in Buenos Aires are still set to go ahead from October 25. European fans will have the chance to catch the tour again when it returns for a second leg in 2023 - which will include dates in Manchester and Cardiff in June.

The statement added: “To everyone in Brazil who was looking forward to these concerts, we're extremely sorry for any disappointment and inconvenience, and we're so grateful for your understanding at this challenging time where we need to prioritise Chris' [sic] health.

"To everyone affected, please accept our sincere apologies, and thank you as always for your love and support."

The two April 2022 shows that were scheduled for LA's Sofi Stadium have also been postponed until 2023.
