Chris Kamara makes huge career decision amid health battle

Chris Kamara fans were "devastated" as he announced a career move in light of a recent health diagnosis.

It comes after the broadcaster was flooded with messages from concerned viewers after his appearance on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday. The 64-year-old was covering the League One match between Rotherham United and Shrewsbury Town when fans following the programme noticed he appeared to be struggling with his speech.

Mr Kamara revealed last year he had been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, and has since developed a speech disorder. In a tweet on Saturday, he said: "Just wanted to let a few of you know who tweeted me today that I am ok ish. Alongside my Thyroid problem I have developed Apraxia of Speech & have been working to get my speech back to normal.

On Monday, he returned to the social media platform to thank those who had been supportive. He also said part of his career may have to "take a back seat" for the time being.

He said: "Thank you so much to everyone for your best wishes. Twitter can be a wonderful platform. The response about my Apraxia has been overwhelming.

"Unfortunately for you viewers this is not the end of me but 'Live TV' might have to take a back seat at the moment. Thank you."

Some of his fans were clearly upset by the news they'd be seeing less of Kammy, while others rushed to wish him well. Replying to his tweet, BallyDonna said: "Noo unless too stressy for you please keep doing live, we need to see real people overseeing real difficulties. You are an inspiration x" [sic]

Carly W said: "Devastating but totally understand. Onwards and upwards fella", and Pete Midhurst said: "Wishing you all the best Chris. Hope it’s not too long before you’re back on live TV pal."
