Chris Kaba: Fundraiser by family of rapper shot by police raises £22k

A fundraiser by the family of a rapper shot dead by police has collected more than £20,000 amid growing calls for bodycam evidence to be released.

Chris Kaba, 24, died after a police chase ended with him being shot by a police marks man in Streatham Hill, south London.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct has launched a homicide investigation into the shooting after it was revealed Mr Kaba was unarmed.

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry into the incident on September 5.

Mr Kaba’s family launched a GoFundMe page to raise £50,000 towards a campaign to highlight the case under the banner “Justice for Chris Kaba”. It has already reached £22,660 in under a week.

The Met Police said in its statement on Monday the firearms officer had been suspended due to the “significant impact on public confidence”, but its decision did “not determine the outcome of the IOPC investigation”.

Jefferson Bosela, Mr Kaba’s cousin, said the family would like to see bodycam and aerial footage of the incident, and would also like to know how long the IOPC investigation will take to complete.

Mr Kaba, who had been due to become a father, died after the Audi he was driving was boxed in by two police vehicles in Kirkstall Gardens and one round was fired.

Mr Bosela said: “We want a timeline of how long the investigation will take because the IOPC are renowned for having very lengthy investigations. We want it to be swift, we want it to be effective and … thorough.”

He also said the family were unhappy that it had taken a week for the officer to be suspended.
