Chris Eubanks and Sebastian Korda secure 2-0 lead for US

Tennis - US Open

In a thrilling Davis Cup qualifying match, the United States took a commanding 2-0 lead against Ukraine with impressive victories from Chris Eubanks and Sebastian Korda. The presence of Eubanks, who stepped in as a late replacement for the injured Taylor Fritz, proved instrumental in securing the American team's advantage.

Eubanks, ranked No. 32 in the world and known for his Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance last year, made a memorable Davis Cup debut. Facing off against Viacheslav Bielinskyi, ranked No. 498, Eubanks displayed his dominance on the court, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2. Eubanks utilized his powerful forehand, firing an impressive 15 forehand winners that left his opponent struggling to find answers.

Reflecting on his performance, Eubanks admitted feeling nervous leading up to the match but quickly found his rhythm once he stepped onto the court. 'I started off really nervous. I've been pretty nervous all day since I found out I was going to play,' Eubanks confessed. 'But when I got out on court, things calmed down, and I feel like I played a really high level.'

Meanwhile, Korda, ranked No. 33, showcased his skills and resilience on the way to a hard-fought victory over Oleksii Krutykh, ranked No. 342. Korda's powerful serve played a pivotal role, with six of his 16 aces coming during the critical stages in the last two games. Ultimately, Korda triumphed with a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4 victory, showcasing the talent that runs in his family. His father, Petr Korda, was a former Australian Open champion, and his sisters, Nelly and Jessica, are professional golfers.

The absence of Taylor Fritz, the highest-ranked American man at No. 9, due to an injured right hip was a setback for the team. However, the commanding performances from Eubanks and Korda have put the United States in a favorable position. They now have the opportunity to clinch a spot in the next round with a win in Friday's opening doubles match. Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram are set to represent the U.S., facing Vitaliy Sachko and Illya Beloborodko from Ukraine.

It is worth mentioning that this Davis Cup qualifying event is being held on indoor hard courts at SEB Arena in Lithuania due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022. The organizers have made the necessary adjustments to ensure the safe continuation of the tournament.

The 12 winners from this qualifying round, which concludes on Sunday, will advance to the highly anticipated 2024 Davis Cup Finals. Joining these qualifiers will be the reigning champion Italy, 2023 runner-up Australia, and the wild-card entries Britain and Spain. The highly competitive nature of this year's field promises to deliver riveting matches throughout the tournament.
