Chris Ashton celebrates 101st Premiership try by applauding himself from the stands

Premiership legend Chris Ashton celebrated surpassing 100 Premiership tries via a hat-trick by clapping himself in a moment reminiscent of the iconic Felipe Contepomi celebration.

The former England international played a big role against Exeter Chiefs on Sunday as the Tigers ran riot in a 62-19 win at Welford Road. He became the first player in Premiership history to notch up a century of tries in the competition.

The 44-cap Englishman bagged his 99th after pouncing on an Anthony Watson grubber, before having his 100th disallowed for a foot in touch. A penalty try was controversially awarded after Chiefs' Olly Woodburn was found to have dived on Ashton, which you can read more about that here.

The wing crossed for one of his easier scores to notch up the 100th, and while there was no 'Ash Splash' he did he get mobbed by his teammates.

Then, he celebrated the almighty 101st in emphatic fashion, jumping the barriers, sitting in the stands and clapping his own effort. It is quite brilliant, and commentator Nick Mullins was loving it. He said: "That's the way to bring up a 100, and do more than 100, and he's doing a Contepomi! With Felipe Contepomi in the crowd, he's doing what the great Argentinian did back in his Bristol days."

It was announced last week that Ashton would retire from rugby at the end of the 2022/2023 season, drawing a glittering 18-year career to a close. The 36-year-old has played for six different clubs in the Gallagher Premiership, as well as enjoying an extremely successful stint in France with Toulon, where he scored 24 tries in 23 games.

He is the all-time leading try-scorer in both the Heineken Champions Cup and Premiership with 41 and 101 respectively.
