Chris Armas profiled as Leeds United coach survives cull ahead of Man United double header

It has been less than two weeks since Chris Armas arrived at Leeds United in order to bolster Jesse Marsch's backroom staff. A compatriot and former team-mate of Marsch, Armas was seen as an ally for former RB Leipzig chief, who was feeling the pressure of a poor run that saw Leeds without a win since November 5.

That pressure ultimately told folllowing Sunday's drab 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest as the axe fell on Marsch's time at the club, along with several members of his backroom staff. Rene Maric, Cameron Toshack and Pierre Barrieu have all left the club, but one man missing from that list was Armas, who was brought in to replace Mark Jackson after his exit to MK Dons in December.

Armas and Michael Skubala are now the two most senior and experienced coaches at the club and are therefore set to lead the side into Wednesday night's daunting trip to Old Trafford to face bitter rivals Manchester United.

Here is a closer look at Armas' background...

Armas was heavily linked with taking the role as assistant at the Whites back in the summer but opted against taking the job and instead returned to his native America.

The former midfielder spent his 11-year playing career at LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire respectively - registering 273 appearances and 12 goals for the latter.

He was capped 66 times for the United States national team, although he didn't feature for his nation at a World Cup finals. However, he did win the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice in 2002 and 2005 respectively, and was also voted US Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2000.

At club level, Armas won six trophies, including the MLS Cup in 1998, and was named in the MLS Best XI on five occasions, and in the MLS All-Star side on a further six occasions.

After his retirement, Armas acted as assistant manager to Denis Hamlett for 18 months at Chicago Fire, before leaving the professional game for four years to serve as the head women's soccer coach at Adelphi University.

He returned to the MLS to become assistant to Jesse Marsch at New York Red Bulls for three years, and he subsequently replaced him as manager in the summer of 2018.

The 50-year-old took charge of 71 games at the Red Bulls and won the MLS Supporters Shield in 2018. His team contained Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams, who came through the youth ranks at New York Red Bulls.

Armas was sacked after just over two years at the helm in September 2020, and took his next managerial role at MLS rivals FC Toronto four months later. His spell at Toronto was even more short-lived, as he was sacked following a humiliating 7-1 drubbing at the hands of DC United, which was the club's sixth defeat on the bounce.

His latest role prior to his hiring at Elland Road was at Manchester United, where he acted as assistant to Ralf Rangnick for 28 games. He was without a club since leaving Old Trafford following Erik Ten Hag's appointment in July 2022.
