Newcastle United are aiming to brush aside the cobwebs of yesteryear against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend. Just four third-round victories in 11 seasons left fans feeling disillusioned with the FA Cup during the Mike Ashley era.
Even last year, the Magpies were humiliated again by lower-league opposition. Cambridge United rocked up to St James’ Park and did a job on Eddie Howe’s side - a result that heightened fears about relegation.
Newcastle enter the 142nd edition of the FA Cup in a far healthier state, sitting third in the Premier League and two transfer windows into their new ownership. While there are injury concerns to contend with, United head into the clash as overwhelming favourites against a League One side.

Long-standing absentee Alexander Isak - signed for a record-breaking £60million in August - could make an anticipated return from the bench. Howe has remained coy on the Swede’s chances of featuring, with no football since the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on September 17.
Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett and Paul Dummett are also ruled out for several months. In previous years, the FA Cup has been used as a vehicle to rotate the squad.
But Howe has fielded a strong side in every cup appearance since his appointment last November. A quarter-final clash in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday highlights the 45-year-old’s preference to take every domestic competition seriously.
Recalled goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is available for selection following his loan move at Manchester United while youngster Elliot Anderson has overcome a recent niggle. Using our widget below, select your Newcastle side to face the Owls on Saturday evening.
