Once upon a time, Cadbury's Creme Eggs only appeared in shops at Easter. Then it became the norm to be spotted replacing Christmas stock in stores as soon as January hit and now chocolate fans can find them virtually any time of the year.
In fact, Cadbury's Halloween edition of 'goo heads' bear a striking resemblance to the favourite confectionary item. But exactly what is that the 'goo' we are tucking into? The question seems to be perplexing sweet-toothed Twitter users, according to one report.
One social media user declared: "I have a huge problem weighing on my mind: what is the substance in the middle of a Creme Egg called? What is it? A goo?"
And they weren't on their own. Someone else asked: "I have a question. What is the goo made from in a Creme Egg? The debate continued on Tiktok, where Creme Egg fans were equally mystified: "I always thought the inside was coloured caramel," said one user.
Looking further into the debate, the Mirror decided to explore the conversation further and there were some surprising suggestions. "What's inside them? Toothpaste? Frosting?", asked one person.
Cadbury’s describes their popular Easter treat as, "a milk chocolate shell with a soft fondant centre". A TikTok user took a closer look at the fondant in a recent video, sharing what it is actually made of.
Abbey, known online as @abbeythefoodscientist, revealed the Creme Egg’s contents, saying: "The inside is a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, and water, or what's called fondant."
While sweet toothed social media user replied: "Okay I want to go make a massive bowl of it now I know what it is." However, not everyone was impressed. One person shocked fellow chocolate fans by saying: "Am I the only one who doesn’t like the filling?"
Cadbury’s list the ingredients as sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, inverted sugar syrup, dried whey, vegetable fats and dried egg white. The chocolate giants claim this is not just an Easter treat restricted to the spring festival. Over 500 million Creme Eggs are made all year-round, they say, with a massive two-thirds being eaten in the UK alone. "That is 3.5 Cadbury Creme Eggs for every person in this country to enjoy," they say.
That big sugar rush equates to over 6.5 teaspoons of total sugar, 6 grams of fat and over 170 calories per egg, according to the Mirror. This came as a shock to some social media followers.
"Just found out that Cadbury’s Creme Eggs have got loads of sugar in them. Really upset about this, had no idea," said one worried one user. Another said: "As a lover of Cadbury creme eggs (and sugar in general) I consider it a great feat of strength that I’ve only eaten one today. #myteethhurt."
