Chocolate fans are only just learning what's actually inside Cadbury Creme Eggs

Once Christmas is out of the way, we can look forward to having Easter confectionery packing the aisles again. But surely the most eagerly anticipated is the re-appearance of all-time favourite, Cadbury’s Creme Egg?

Whether you are are a down in one job, or prefer to slowly lick the contents before relishing the chocolate shell, have you ever for one second considered just what the sweet centre is made of?

It seems to be perplexing sweet-toothed Twitter users who want to know, ‘just what are we scoffing?’ with many taking to social media to ask the important question, with one user writing: "I have a huge problem weighing on my mind: what is the substance in the middle of a Creme Egg called? What is it? A goo?"

"I have a question. What is the goo made from in a Creme Egg?", another baffled chocolate fan pondered.

The debate continued on Tiktok, where Creme Egg fans were equally mystified: "I always thought the inside was coloured caramel," said one user.

While someone else commented: "What's inside them? Toothpaste? Frosting?"

Cadbury’s describes their popular Easter treat as, "a milk chocolate shell with a soft fondant centre".

A TikTok user took a closer look at the fondant in a recent video, sharing what it is actually made of.

Abbey, known online as @abbeythefoodscientist, revealed the Creme Egg’s contents, saying: "The inside is a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, and water, or what's called fondant."

"Easily my favorite Easter candy!!," was a response typical of many.

While another asked: "Okay I want to go make a massive bowl of it now I know what it is."

Not everyone was impressed however: "Am I the only one who doesn’t like the filling?"

Cadbury’s list the ingredients as sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, inverted sugar syrup, dried whey, vegetable fats and dried egg white.

The chocolate giants claim this is not just an Easter treat restricted to the spring festival. Over 500 million Creme Eggs are made all year-round, they say, with a massive two-thirds being eaten in the UK alone.

"That is 3.5 Cadbury Creme Eggs for every person in this country to enjoy," they say.

That is a big sugar rush with little nutritional value, with over 6.5 teaspoons of total sugar, 6 grams of fat and over 170 calories per egg.

Social media followers reacted to the sugar hit in a Creme Egg. Some were alarmed: "Just found out that Cadbury’s Creme Eggs have got loads of sugar in them. Really upset about this, had no idea," said one worried one user.

"As a lover of Cadbury creme eggs (and sugar in general) I consider it a great feat of strength that I’ve only eaten one today. #myteethhurt," a user said.

While, for another fan, it was business as usual: "Went out for breakfast and when they asked how I wanted my eggs, I asked for Cadbury Creme."
