Chloe Kelly hails ‘freedom’ Sarina Wiegman gives England’s attackers as goals continue to flow

Chloe Kelly says the freedom England attackers get under Sarina Wiegman is the reason behind their incredible goal record.

England have scored 93 goals in 16 games since Wiegman was appointed, with eight of those coming during Monday’s 8-0 win over Norway.

That victory booked the Lionesses a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022, but before that they have their final group game against Northern Ireland on Friday.

Kelly, who has featured as a substitute in both of England’s games so far, is hoping to start that match and she cannot wait to get a chance to showcase her talent.

“I think it is just we are all fighting for a place. We all have to train well on the training pitch,” said Kelly.

“The quality is brilliant so far in this tournament and I think the players that haven’t got a chance on the pitch yet, we all bring quality onto the training pitch which I think lifts the group as well.

“I think we all have to be ready for the moment. Training is competitive, which helps come game day.

“The freedom that we have is brilliant and I think that shows when we are going forward. It is exciting to watch and from the bench it is really exciting seeing the forwards just play free and enjoying themselves in the final third.

“I think that is when the quality is so good, when you have that no pressure. It’s just - go and enjoy yourself, and create and score.”

England are on a high after beating Norway 8-0, which ensured they will finish as winners of Group A, but Kelly says the squad are keeping their feet on the ground.

“It is about staying grounded, not getting too carried away with an 8-0 win,” she added.

“I think we showed our quality and we were brilliant on the night, but we have to focus on Northern Ireland and we can’t get too carried away with one result.

“It doesn’t define us in this tournament. We just need to focus on the next game and prepare for that.”
