Chloe could soar in UK 'popular' name charts following England Euros win

On Sunday (July 31) England took home the Euro 2022 trophy after beating Germany 2-1 in the final.

The win is said to serve as an "inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations”, Queen Elizabeth II has said.

However it was Chloe Kelly’s extra-time goal that secured England’s win at Wembley and now she could not only be inspiring others, but her name could be too.

It comes as a recent study has predicted as many as 1,137 babies could be given the name Chloe whilst and 409 more girls could be called Leah, after the team’s captain Leah Williamson. The research by My 1st Years has also said that other names such as Ella and Millie could also top the name charts.

According to previous research, the names of each of England’s squad members increased in popularity by 116 per cent on average following the 1966 World Cup win. And now with this in mind, the name experts have calculated that the names of the England Ladies squad would rank as some of the most popular in the nation by the end of the year, if they were to increase in popularity at similar rates.

The research reveals that 2,189 more babies could be called Ella, after goal-scorer Ella Toone, by the end of the year. Such a spike in popularity would mean the name would rank as the UK’s most popular girl’s name, up from 16th position in 2020, if all other names remained at similar numbers .

There could also be 1,530 more babies called Millie - after Millie Bright - meaning the name would be fourth most popular in the UK by the end of 2022 despite only ranking in 33rd position in 2020. Despite Beth Mead winning the Golden Boot in the Euros tournament, it’s thought that only 52 more babies would be named Beth (according to previous statistics) and with no babies being called Jill in 2020, who knows how many bundles of joy could be named after the MBE player Jill Scott in the months to come.

Speaking of the historic and emotional win, Gareth Chadwick, Head of Marketing at My 1st Years said: "The Lionesses' win will not only leave a legacy for women’s football in the history books, but it’ll also have a significant and lasting impact on both women’s sport and the confidence of young girls everywhere for years to come. They have demonstrated what can be achieved through sheer determination and pure passion, and we’ve watched the nation fall in love with them and the sport.

Following the Lionesses’ win it is very likely that we will see a spike in popularity of the names of the winning England squad, just like was seen after the 1966 World Cup trophy win. If popularity increases are similar to that following the ‘66 win, we’re anticipating the likes of already-popular names such as Ella, Millie and Chloe to be commemorated with the birth of thousands of babies this summer and into autumn. Though names such as Jill and Beth weren’t as popular in 2020, we’re sure that inspirational players such as Jill Scott MBE and golden boot winner Beth Mead will cause a spike in popularity over the next few months - and we’re thrilled that such a positive impact like this will be felt by women and girls everywhere. Congratulations to the Lionesses!"
