What’s new: Two Chinese students were shot and injured in a mass shooting at Michigan State University (MSU) that left three people dead and five wounded, the Chinese Consulate-General in Chicago said Thursday.
The two Chinese were taken to a hospital for treatment after the attack on Monday, but are now out of critical condition, the consulate said.
It urged Chinese citizens in the city to take greater security precautions, citing a spate of deadly shootings in the U.S. this year that have included Chinese victims.
The consulate also called on U.S. authorities to “take effective measures” to protect the safety and rights of Chinese citizens who are living and working in the country, including international students.
The background: The incident took place Monday when a gunman opened fire at two locations on campus, MSU police said. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a Twitter post from the police.
The shooting caused grief across the U.S. on Wednesday, including in the Chicago area, which has many students who attend the university in East Lansing, Michigan, local media reported.
In January, three shootings in California killed 19 people, including at least six Chinese.
