Chinese ski jumper gets perfect score despite poor jump in Winter Olympics gaffe

Ski jumper Song Qiwu was mistakenly awarded a perfect score despite a relatively poor jump at the Winter Olympics.

In a somewhat hilarious gaffe, the 20-year-old cleared 70m by the skin of his teeth in the mixed team event - a full 30 metres shorter than the leading competitors.

The commentators and members of the crowd were rather underwhelmed by the jump, as was Qiwu himself.

However, all five judges initially gave the Chinese athlete a perfect score of 20 points.

That would have given Qiwu a total of 60 style points, as the lowest and highest scores from the judges are taken away.

The score also propelled his country into first place in the final, but it was short-lived as his mark happened to be the result of a technical error.

Qiwu was given a revised score of 44 and China would go on to finish last in the first round and, as a result, they failed to secure qualification for the second round.

In a controversial event which saw defending champions Germany, Japan, Austria and Norway all have jumpers disqualified due to suit violations in the final, Slovenia went on to clinch the gold medal.

Agnieszka Baczkowska, the official responsible for the disqualifications, has defended her decision to disqualify the contenders.

"It was my hardest day in 10 years," she said. "But I have to make sure that everyone has the same opportunities, because it's about justice."

In further controversy at the Games, Chinese skater Fan Kexin was accused of deliberately tripping a Canadian opponent Alyson Charles in a chaotic 500m speed skating race.

Footage on social media appeared to show Kexin reach over a skater and push a marker with her hand towards Charles as the group made their way round a bend.

The marker then slides under the Canadian’s skate causing her to fall to the ice, which subsequently ruled them both out of the race.

Following Charles’ fall, fellow Canadian Kim Boutin went on to win the semi-final race, whilst fellow Canadian Florence Brunelle came in second.
