In a recent incident over the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, a Chinese navy helicopter flew within 10 feet of a Philippine patrol plane, prompting a tense standoff. The Chinese helicopter attempted to force the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' Cessna Caravan turboprop plane out of what China claims as its airspace.

The Philippine pilot radioed a warning to the Chinese helicopter, citing the dangerous proximity and violation of safety standards set by aviation authorities. Despite the close encounter, the Philippine plane maintained its course without altering its path or altitude.

The Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fisheries reaffirmed their commitment to asserting sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea, despite China's aggressive actions. The Chinese military claimed that the Philippine plane had illegally entered China's airspace over Huangyan Island.

Amidst growing tensions, the Philippines has engaged in a shame campaign to expose China's assertive actions and has strengthened security alliances with the United States and other Western countries. The U.S. has reiterated its commitment to defend the Philippines in case of armed attacks, including in the South China Sea.
