A high-ranking Chinese official, Zhao Leji, who serves as the chairman of the National People's Congress and holds the position of the No. 3 official in the ruling Communist Party, is set to lead a delegation to North Korea this week. The visit, announced by both countries on Tuesday, is scheduled to take place from Thursday to Saturday.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed Zhao's visit, describing it as a goodwill trip to North Korea. The purpose of the visit is to attend the opening ceremony for the “China-North Korea Friendship Year.” However, specific details regarding the agenda of the visit have not been disclosed, with the Foreign Ministry spokesperson indicating that arrangements are still being negotiated.
North Korea's official KCNA news agency also reported on the upcoming visit, further solidifying the diplomatic engagement between the two nations. Zhao Leji, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, which is the highest leadership body within the Communist Party of China, will be representing Chinese leader Xi Jinping during the visit.
