House Committee Holds Hearing on Dangers Posed by State-Backed Chinese Hackers
In a House committee hearing held today, FBI Director Christopher Wray and other intelligence and cybersecurity officials raised concerns about the growing threat posed by state-backed Chinese hackers to the United States. The officials warned that these hackers are targeting critical infrastructure, with the intent to disrupt and cripple vital sectors such as energy, communications, and water treatment.
Director Wray revealed that FBI and cyber partners have recently discovered hundreds of routers that have been compromised by a hacking program called Volt Typhoon, which is supported by the People's Republic of China (PRC). This program has injected malicious software into various U.S. sectors, posing significant risks to national security. While U.S. agencies have successfully disrupted the hackers' access, Director Wray emphasized the challenges in dismantling China's extensive hacking network.
Testifying at the hearing, experts asserted that Chinese hackers have breached critical infrastructure systems in the past and warned of the potential consequences of a direct conflict between the U.S. and China in the Pacific region. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's director, Jen Easterly, cited the devastating Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in 2021 as an example. She highlighted the scale of damage that China could inflict on American citizens, envisioning a scenario where multiple pipelines are disrupted, cell phone services go down, polluted water leads to health issues, trains derail, and air traffic and port control systems malfunction simultaneously.
The officials underscored the importance of public awareness and collaboration with the private sector in order to effectively counter this threat. They stressed that the private sector plays a crucial role in partnering with government agencies to strengthen cybersecurity measures and protect critical infrastructure from potential attacks.
