The Chinese government has expressed strong opposition to the recent announcements made by the United States regarding military sales and assistance to Taiwan. The U.S. President, Joe Biden, has authorized the provision of up to $571 million in Defense Department material, services, and military education and training for Taiwan. Additionally, the Defense Department approved $295 million in military sales for Taiwan.
In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement warning the U.S. that it is 'playing with fire' by arming Taiwan and engaging in actions that could destabilize the region. Taiwan, a democratic island with a population of 23 million, is claimed by China as its territory, leading to tensions between the two nations.
The U.S. military sales and assistance to Taiwan are aimed at helping the island defend itself and deter potential attacks from China. The recent $571 million military assistance package follows a previous authorization of $567 million by President Biden in late September. The approved military sales include $265 million for tactical radio systems and $30 million for gun mounts.
Taiwan's Foreign Ministry has welcomed the approval of the military sales, stating that it reaffirms the U.S. government's commitment to Taiwan's defense. The ongoing support from the United States is seen as crucial in maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait and ensuring Taiwan's security amidst growing tensions with China.
