China’s air force is set to officially debut its new stealth fighter jet, the J-35A, at an upcoming air show in Zhuhai. The J-35A is designed for air combat operations and air-to-surface attacks, showcasing China's efforts to modernize its military capabilities and assert its presence in Asia. This new addition to China's fleet is seen as a strategic move to match the United States' stealth fighter capabilities.
The J-35A is the second stealth fighter jet developed by China, following the J-20 that entered service in 2017. Stealth fighters are designed to evade radar detection, allowing for covert missions and enhanced combat capabilities. The J-35A is expected to further strengthen China's air and sea combat capabilities, potentially serving as a carrier-based aircraft in the future.
Analysts have noted China's significant investment in bolstering its forward theater commands with additional J-20s, with over 70 units inducted between July 2023 and June 2024. The J-35A, which has been in development for over a decade, is likely intended for the PLA Navy, with potential production starting early next year.
China's development of stealth fighters has faced allegations of technology theft from the US, which Beijing has vehemently denied. The J-35A is independently developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), showcasing China's advancements in military technology.
Aside from the J-35A, the upcoming air show will feature other cutting-edge technologies, including the H-19 surface-to-air missile system and new reconnaissance and strike UAVs. The event will also see the debut of Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter, along with equipment from 49 countries and regions, highlighting the global representation at the air show.
