China has announced a ban on the export of unregulated civilian drones that could potentially be used for military purposes or in terrorist activities. This decision comes amidst ongoing criticism from Western countries regarding China's stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The ban aims to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and restrict certain drone features that could be misused.
The Commerce Ministry revealed that aspects such as infrared imaging equipment, lasers for target indication, and high-precision inertial measurement equipment will be included in an export control list. The new regulations will take effect on September 1, with the goal of enhancing control over drone exports.
China had previously imposed temporary restrictions on the export of long-range drones, without specifying the exact type. Reports suggest that China's drone sales to Russia have increased significantly, with both countries collaborating on the production of unmanned aerial vehicles.
China is recognized as the fourth-largest exporter of weapons globally, following the United States, France, and Russia. The majority of China's weapon exports are directed towards Pakistan, as per data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Additionally, China has supplied arms to various countries in Asia and Africa.
The use of Chinese drones by U.S. government departments has raised concerns among U.S. security officials. DJI Technology Co., a prominent Chinese drone manufacturer, is a key player in the global drone industry, with its products widely utilized worldwide.
