A court has heard that the 15-year-old boy who was allegedly murdered on Friday in Wilton, NSW, was trying to get a lift home when he was allegedly attacked by 32-year-old Jacob Greig.
Police allege that the teenager — who cannot be named for legal reasons — was intoxicated and waiting at a roadway to be picked up by relatives on Friday night after hanging out with friends.
Police told the court the teen was intoxicated and alone on the side of the road when Greig and a woman arrived in their car.
As he attempted to get into the vehicle, he pulled off a passenger door handle. In response, Greig allegedly got out of the car holding a knife, shouting and advancing towards the 15-year-old.
“He approached the moving vehicle and pulled on the front and rear passenger door handles, causing the rear handle to come off the car and fall into the roadway,” the statement of alleged facts said, per the ABC.
“The accused said: ‘I’ll fucking get you good and I’m going to chop your hand off.’
“The accused then slashed at him with the knife, causing the victim to sustain a significant laceration to the inner right forearm. As a result of that laceration, the victim has started to bleed profusely.”
The teenager allegedly jumped on Grieg’s car but fell off as Grieg’s friend began to drive away.
The teenager was found dead the next morning by his friends who were camping nearby. Prosecutors allege that Greig did not do anything to de-escalate the situation and left the teenager to die.
Greig’s lawyer Javid Faid made an application for the accused to be released on home detention as he is expecting his second child in a month and needed to continue working to support his partner. Faid also questioned whether the teenager’s death was a result from the laceration or the fall from the car.
However, the prosecution fought to deny Greig bail.
“Much would depend on the post-mortem, which is yet to take place, but I do note the facts where it says at 7.30 the following morning, the victim’s friends have walked from the camp and found the victim covered in blood,” Magistrate Robert Rabbidge told the court.
“There’s nothing more serious than the alleged murder of a 15-year-old. The facts are quite extraordinary and seem to show a considerable amount of powerful evidence.
“It’s clearly an extraordinary case … Mr Greig is looking at many decades in prison. I must do my duty to the community and deny him bail.”
On Sunday, 32-year-old Greig was charged with murder after presenting himself to Narellan Police Station on Saturday.
Authorities are still urging anyone who was in the area who may have dash-cam footage from 6pm Friday or information about the incident to come forward.
Greig is currently behind bars where he will remain until his court date on January 8, 2025.
